OL 2016: Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces Sends 55 Letters to Congress

This is a second in a series about the congregations and schools in New Mexico that participated in the 2016 Offering of Letters. In Part 1, we featured the letters that  elementary and middle school children at South Valley Preparatory School (SVPS) and Holy Ghost Catholic School wrote to Rep. Lujan Grisham, Sen. Tom Udall and Sen. Martin Heinrich. Those two letter-writing efforts were conducted in conjunction with the Offering of Letters at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Community in March.

Today we share photographs from the Offering of Letters at Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces, which at the moment is our lone congregation in the Second Congressional District. Peace Lutheran Church was one of seven congregations in New Mexico that held an Offering of Letters on April 24.

This congregation has been steadfast in its efforts to speak out for communities and individuals in need in our country and overseas. In February of  this year, the Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-New Mexico recognized Peace Lutheran Church with the John and Chris Haaland Advocacy Award.

According to Ellen Young, who coordinated the Offering of Letters at the church, members of Peace Lutheran wrote a total of 55 letters to Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and Rep. Steve Pearce urging them to prioritize support for global maternal and child health programs, emphasizing nutrition.

A #hungerfistbump for Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces.  (A job well done in social media lingo!)

In coming days, we will feature other churches that had Offerings of Letters in 2016, including All Saints Lutheran Church, Albuquerque Mennonite Church and others.
