On May 5,about 65 supporters and friends of Roadrunner Food Bank helped
officially dedicate and open the demonstration kitchen in the food bank's Healthy Foods Center (HFC).
The evening featured updates from Feeding America about #health and #hunger
initiatives happening across the U.S., and ones happening here in
New Mexico. Research shows the connection between chronic health conditions
and lack of nutritious food among our low-income neighbors.
The Healthy Foods Center is a medical referral food pantry. Here's how it works. Several participating
health care centers ask patients questions related to their food
situations. If a patient answers in a way that indicates they are food
insecure or experiencing consistent hunger, the medical professional
gives them a “prescription” for food. The food prescription allows the
patient to visit our Healthy Foods Center once a week to receive access
to fruits, vegetables, dairy, milk and other healthy food items. The demonstration kitchen, funded by Presbyterian, will help clients learn how to prepare #nutritious meals. Follow this link to help fund items for the kitchen Currently, the Center is operating part-time during its pilot phase.
