David Beckmann Talks About Impact of Sequestration on the Poor

As the March 1 deadline for sequestration approached Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, appeared on“Viewpoint” with host John Fugelsang (Current TV) to explain why he signed a pastoral letter urging President Obama and congressional leaders to protect programs for the poor,

“[Sequestration] cuts 600,000 women and children off nutrition assistance in this country. The estimate is that it may throw 700,000 people out of work. You know, that’s the worst thing for poor people. And then globally, it will cut back on medications for AIDS and tuberculosis and malaria,” Beckmann says. “Those cuts kill.” “Figuring out how to cut back, how to reduce our deficit without hurting people who are having a hard time feeding their kids is really important to our national character,” Beckmann said.

Here is a clip of the interview (preceded by a commercial).
