ONE to Observe World Food Day with Sweet Potatoes in Nashville (and Elsewhere)

By Elaine VanCleave
Anti-hunger Advocate, Nashville

On October 16th, World Food Day, ONE will be hosting special events across the country to bring attention to hunger and malnutrition.

Celebrity chefs Spike Mendelsohn, Sam Talbot, and Hugh Acheson are a few of the "top chefs" being featured at ONE events around the U.S. The real "star" of these events; however, is the humble sweet potato – in support of ONE’s new global campaign, called ‘Sweet Potato on the Menu, Nutrition on the Agenda.’

In Nashville, Chef Kristin Beringson of Holland House Bar & Refuge will share a special sweet potato dish, nutritionist Andrea Wilson will discuss the Impact of Nutrition on Human Development, and special guest Ben McDonald of Sidewalk Prophets will lead everyone in a Heat Tweet to our nation’s leaders.

ONE is calling on world leaders to make measurable commitments to reduce chronic malnutrition by 2016 and help 25 million children reach their full potential. A billion people suffer from chronic malnutrition and more than 2.4 million children will die this year as a result. Despite major progress in other areas, nutrition is an issue widely overlooked on the development agenda, particularly in Africa. The results of malnutrition are devastating - it leads to irreversibly stunted development and shorter, less productive lives. Less productive lives mean no escape from poverty.
