Federal Emergency Funds in Albuquerque Area

Bernalillo County, Sandoval County, Valencia County, Torrance County, and the New Mexico State Set-Aside HAS BEEN AWARDED FEDERAL FUNDS MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY’S (DHS) FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA) UNDER THE EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER NATIONAL BOARD PROGRAM (EFSP).

The above named jurisdictions have been chosen to receive funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in their respective communities. The amounts available per county/set-aside are as follows:
Bernalillo County $ 766,298
Sandoval County $ 164,340
Torrance County $ 19,313
Valencia County $ 84,958
State Set-Aside, NM $ 470,807

The selection was made by a National Board that is chaired by the US Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide.
The Local Board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

The Local Board, made up of representatives from the Catholic Charities, Jewish Federation, local government, Salvation Army, Local food banks, homeless representatives, Red Cross and United Way, will determine how the funds are awarded to the above jurisdictions and are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this phase of the program. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

1) Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government
2) Be eligible to receive Federal funds
3) Have an accounting system
4) Practice non-discrimination
5) Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
6) Have a voluntary board, if they are a private voluntary organization
Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

The above mentioned jurisdictions distributed EFSP funds previously to: Barrett Foundation, First United Methodist Church, The Salvation Army, The Storehouse, United Way, The Good Shepherd Center, Rio Grande Food Project, St. Martin’s Hospitality Center, Catholic Charities, Silver Horizons, Family Promise, Heading Home, South Albuquerque Cooperative Ministries, Meals on Wheels, The Storehouse West, Haven House, Midwest Community Action Program, Bethel Community Storehouse, Datil Community Presbyterian Church, and Spirit of Hidalgo.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Melissa Fox, EFSP Local Board Contact via e-mail at Melissa.fox@uwcnm.org to obtain the application process. The deadline to submit applications is May 19, 2020.
