On this Monday, August 21, a good portion of the United States will experience a Total Eclipse of the Sun. We will only see the eclipse partially in Albuquerque, but the states to the north of us and to the east of us will see the full eclipse. I was one of the procrastinators who did not get special sunglasses, so I won't be watching directly. NASA offers an option to the glasses. Watch this video.
Along those lines, I want to share this heartwarming article from Columbia, South Carolina, where United Way of the Midlands and its partner agencies teamed up with
the City of Columbia to give out glasses to homeless individuals ahead of the
eclipse. According to United Way spokeswoman Karina Henry, everyone deserves the chance to experience the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. However, only 250 glasses were available to give out, so it won't be "everyone" who will be able to watch the eclipse. Here is the article from the Associated Press via U.S. News & World Report.
Finally, eclipse has occasionally been the subject of musical compositions. This first song from 1983 is familiar to many of us, Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart
The second 20-minute video is entitled Sleeping Sung. 4 Ballads of the Eclipse by Nightwish. Tuomas Holopainen composed the piece in honor of the solar eclipse that was experienced in European skies in 1999.
